Val d'Aran by BUFF

3 July 2026Vielha, Val d'Aran, Spain

Distance

100km

Elevation

3600m

Val d'Aran by BUFF is one of Spain's most demanding mountain bike events, set in the stunning Val d'Aran in the heart of the Pyrénées. The 100 km marathon route accumulates a punishing 3,600 m of climbing through alpine meadows, dense forests and technical mountain trails at altitudes exceeding 2,000 m. The Pyrenean terrain is unforgiving: expect steep, rocky climbs that require solid bike handling, technical descents on loose surfaces, and long stretches at altitude where the thin air amplifies every effort. Unlike road events, the technical sections mean you cannot simply focus on fitness — bike skills are equally important for both safety and speed. Training should combine endurance building with technical skill development. Include long MTB rides with significant climbing to build mountain-specific fitness, and dedicate sessions to practicing technical climbs and descents. Strength work for upper body and core will help you stay controlled on rough terrain for hours. If possible, train at altitude to prepare for the reduced oxygen levels of the high Pyrenean passes.

Frequently asked questions about training for Val d'Aran by BUFF

How long do I need to prepare for Val d'Aran by BUFF?+
NUA builds your plan backwards from race day. For most gran fondos and similar distances, 12-16 weeks is the sweet spot — enough to build aerobic base, then sharpen race-specific efforts. With less than 8 weeks, NUA adapts the plan to focus on finishing strong rather than chasing peak performance.
What does NUA's training plan for Val d'Aran by BUFF look like?+
A weekly mix of Z2 endurance, race-specific intervals (climbs, sustained efforts, attacks), and structured recovery. Each week adapts based on your readiness, completed sessions, and how the previous week went. The closer to race day, the more specific the work — tapering kicks in automatically in the final two weeks.
Can NUA help if it's my first time at this distance?+
Yes. During onboarding NUA asks about your weekly volume, experience, and goal (finish, finish strong, target time). First-timers get a base-building approach focused on completing the distance comfortably. Experienced riders get more aggressive interval work and race-day pacing strategy.
Does NUA's plan for Val d'Aran by BUFF include indoor training?+
Yes. NUA prescribes both outdoor and indoor sessions based on your availability and weather. Indoor workouts export as ZWO files compatible with Zwift, Rouvy, TrainerRoad, and intervals.icu, and the full plan syncs to Garmin and Wahoo head units.
