Strade Bianche Gran Fondo

3 October 2026Siena, Tuscany, Italy

Distance

130km

Elevation

1900m

The Strade Bianche Gran Fondo takes you through the heart of Tuscany on the legendary white gravel roads — the strade bianche — that make this one of cycling's most iconic events. Starting and finishing in Siena's breathtaking Piazza del Campo, the 130 km route winds through rolling hills, medieval villages and stretches of unpaved white clay that test both your bike handling and your legs. The constant alternation between tarmac and gravel sectors demands versatility: you need power to push through the loose surfaces, endurance to handle 1,900 m of climbing, and the technical confidence to stay smooth when the road turns rough. Late-season fitness and the ability to sustain effort on varied terrain are essential. Training should focus on building a strong aerobic base with specific sessions on mixed surfaces. Include tempo efforts on gravel or dirt roads to develop comfort at race pace on loose terrain, and practice climbing at threshold on gradients similar to the Tuscan hills. Brick sessions that alternate between smooth and rough surfaces will prepare your body for the constant changes the course demands.

Frequently asked questions about training for Strade Bianche Gran Fondo

How long do I need to prepare for Strade Bianche Gran Fondo?+
NUA builds your plan backwards from race day. For most gran fondos and similar distances, 12-16 weeks is the sweet spot — enough to build aerobic base, then sharpen race-specific efforts. With less than 8 weeks, NUA adapts the plan to focus on finishing strong rather than chasing peak performance.
What does NUA's training plan for Strade Bianche Gran Fondo look like?+
A weekly mix of Z2 endurance, race-specific intervals (climbs, sustained efforts, attacks), and structured recovery. Each week adapts based on your readiness, completed sessions, and how the previous week went. The closer to race day, the more specific the work — tapering kicks in automatically in the final two weeks.
Can NUA help if it's my first time at this distance?+
Yes. During onboarding NUA asks about your weekly volume, experience, and goal (finish, finish strong, target time). First-timers get a base-building approach focused on completing the distance comfortably. Experienced riders get more aggressive interval work and race-day pacing strategy.
Does NUA's plan for Strade Bianche Gran Fondo include indoor training?+
Yes. NUA prescribes both outdoor and indoor sessions based on your availability and weather. Indoor workouts export as ZWO files compatible with Zwift, Rouvy, TrainerRoad, and intervals.icu, and the full plan syncs to Garmin and Wahoo head units.
