L'Eroica

4 October 2026Gaiole in Chianti, Tuscany, Italy

Distance

209km

Elevation

3700m

L'Eroica is more than a cycling event — it is a cultural celebration of cycling heritage. Held in the Chianti hills of Tuscany, this unique ride requires pre-1987 bikes with steel frames, down-tube shifters and traditional components. The longest route covers 209 km with 3,700 m of climbing over the famous white roads (strade bianche) that weave through vineyards and olive groves. The challenge is both physical and mechanical. Riding vintage bikes on rough gravel roads demands a different kind of fitness: you cannot rely on modern gearing to spin up hills, and the lack of ergonomic features means your body absorbs every bump. Comfort on the bike for long hours, upper body strength for controlling the bike on loose terrain, and the patience to maintain a steady rhythm are all essential. Training should include long rides that emphasize time in the saddle over intensity. Practice on gravel or rough roads with a higher gear ratio to simulate vintage gearing. Build core and upper body endurance alongside your legs. Most importantly, enjoy the process — L'Eroica rewards those who embrace the spirit of riding for the pure love of cycling.

Frequently asked questions about training for L'Eroica

How long do I need to prepare for L'Eroica?+
NUA builds your plan backwards from race day. For most gran fondos and similar distances, 12-16 weeks is the sweet spot — enough to build aerobic base, then sharpen race-specific efforts. With less than 8 weeks, NUA adapts the plan to focus on finishing strong rather than chasing peak performance.
What does NUA's training plan for L'Eroica look like?+
A weekly mix of Z2 endurance, race-specific intervals (climbs, sustained efforts, attacks), and structured recovery. Each week adapts based on your readiness, completed sessions, and how the previous week went. The closer to race day, the more specific the work — tapering kicks in automatically in the final two weeks.
Can NUA help if it's my first time at this distance?+
Yes. During onboarding NUA asks about your weekly volume, experience, and goal (finish, finish strong, target time). First-timers get a base-building approach focused on completing the distance comfortably. Experienced riders get more aggressive interval work and race-day pacing strategy.
Does NUA's plan for L'Eroica include indoor training?+
Yes. NUA prescribes both outdoor and indoor sessions based on your availability and weather. Indoor workouts export as ZWO files compatible with Zwift, Rouvy, TrainerRoad, and intervals.icu, and the full plan syncs to Garmin and Wahoo head units.
