The Dragon Ride is Wales' premier cycling sportive, taking riders through the spectacular Brecon Beacons National Park and the valleys of South Wales. The Gran Fondo route stretches an epic 305 km with 5,450 m of climbing, making it one of the longest and most challenging one-day sportives in the United Kingdom. Shorter routes are available, but the full Dragon is the ultimate test. The Welsh terrain is deceptively tough: the climbs are not Alpine in scale but they are steep, frequent and relentless. The roads twist through narrow valleys, over exposed moorland and through charming villages. Weather is a major factor — Welsh conditions can change rapidly, and riders must be prepared for rain, wind and cold even in June. Training for the Gran Fondo requires exceptional endurance. Build your long ride capacity to 250+ km and practice riding in adverse weather conditions. Include hilly rides with repeated short, steep efforts to match the course profile. Mental toughness training is valuable — the Dragon Ride's length means you'll spend 12+ hours in the saddle, and the ability to keep pushing through discomfort is what separates finishers from non-finishers.
